Feisty Fawn Update: Wireless Works, Compiz Flaky
Well after an update, my wireless works flawlessly (no configuring required!).However, I should be honest: Compiz is flaky. I’m using the open source ATI X Windows drivers and sometimes a maximized window’s title bar doesn’t render. Just a minor annoyance for me, but evidently I’ve had more luck than most with Compiz:
- My friend Dan Coulter comments he and a co-worker had problems with it.
- A student at school crashed X Windows trying to use it. He had a nVidia graphics adapter. I’m not sure if he had installed the proprietary drivers or not.
For me, Compiz is stable and the minor title bar annoyance is worth the more natural feel of a 3D desktop. Rotating workspaces and wobbly windows give me the feeling of working with real tangible objects instead of flat pixels. And even the most pragmatic users should like Viewport Windows (<Ctrl><Alt><Up>).

I have had great success with Edgy and Beryl. It took some finagling to get setup, but has been rock solid ever since. I am also using the proprietary ATI drivers. I had to get older drivers to support my card (the latest ones made it crash) but I haven’t had any problems.
And yeah, I really like the more tactile feel of the 3D desktop. It is much more natural. I don’t think I could go back to non-wobbly windows

I forgot to point out last time that Jake and I both installed Feisty on Dell Latitude C6xx series laptops. I don’t know if we have the exact same model, but it’s likely that they have very similar video cards. I might just need to look for better drivers at some point.
